What Do You Need to Bring When Changing Your Address on a Tennessee Driver’s License?

Keep in mind that new residents can only obtain Tennessee driver’s licenses if they don’t have any outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on their out-of-state licenses. However, if you’re an upstanding citizen, then you simply have to bring the following items with you when you visit your respective Tennessee DMV:

  • Your current out-of-state license
  • Proof of identity (two forms required)
  • Proof of Tennessee residency (two forms required)
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Resident Status, or Temporary Legal Presence documents
  • Proof of social security number
  • Application for a Tennessee Driver’s License

How to Change the Address on Your Tennessee Driver’s License If You’re Moving Into the State

The state of Tennessee requires you to register your vehicle within 30 days of moving in. You’ll need to visit your local County Clerk’s office to update your vehicle registration, which will cost $26.50 for standard non-commercial cars, trucks, & SUVs. You’ll want to bring the documents mentioned above, as well as the name and or address of the lien holder to whom you are making payments OR, in the event of no lien holder, your out-of-state title.

How to Change the Address on Your Tennessee Driver’s License If You’re Moving within the State

You’ll have 10 days to update your Tennessee driver’s license with your new address after you move within the state. You’ll choose three different methods of updating your address:

  1. Fill Out a Tennessee DMV Change of Address Form Online: You can do so here. Be sure to have your current Tennessee driver’s license number handy, as well as the last four digits of your social security number.
  2. Go to a Tennessee Driver Services Center in Person: Find a Tennessee driver’s license office near you and fill out a Tennessee DMV change of address form in person.
  3. Snail Mail: Want to do a Tennessee DMV change of address by mail? Send a letter with your full name, birthday, driver’s license number, social security number, and former and current home address to the Tennessee Dept of Safety and Homeland Security, ATTN: Records, 1150 Foster Avenue, Nashville, TN 37243.
